The film you seek is "The Story of G.I. Joe", 1945, starring Robert Mitchum
and with Burgess Meredith as Pyle. It is based on his wartime writings but
was sanitized in some places, such as the decision to change Captain Waskoe's
name ( the officer casualty in Italy who was laid out next to the aid
station) to something more American. It is 1hr, 45 minutes and I can't find
it anywhere, either. There are some stills of it in the book "Life Goes to
War".
