I believe none of these markings were "official", meaning that they
were never described in any
army regulations. It would be up to the unit commanders, or
sometimes just the driver, to put it
on. That means they would be painted with whatever stencil was
availble, or even hand painted. The
color would usually be white. From what I've seen of markings like
this, 1" tall letters were popular.
