Hi Denny!

Congrats on your 1948 jeep restoration project. Sounds great! You asked
about canvas tops, etc for your jeep.

For "civilian" style jeep tops, as well as a lot of general parts, you might
call JC Whitney Co. They publish a good-size mail-order catalog of
automotive parts and supplies, and have a fair selection of jeep gear.
Call for their general catalog and also the special jeep catalog (312)
431-6102.

For high-quality "military-style" canvas tops, check out

Beachwood Canvas

and

A great website which has links to, and lists of, suppliers is

http://www.olive-drab.com/

You'll find a lot of good resources there.

The national organization for military vehicle enthusiasts is the MVPA. They
publish two good monthly magazines (Army Motors and Supply Line) and their
web site is at

http://www.mvpa.org/

There is another great magazine that comes out bimonthly called Military
Vehicles Magazine... they have a web site at

http://members.aol.com/mvehicle/home.htm

Chilton's publishes a pretty good general repair manual for older jeeps and
I've been seeing it at close-out prices at some bookshops - as low as $2 in
one case!! It is Chilton's number 40200 and covers the CJ (civilian Jeep)
models 1945-1970. Of course most of the info is applicable to military jeeps
as well. JC Whitney's sells it regular price, if you can't find it cheap.

For reprints of the real military manuals, see Portrayal Press at

http://www.portrayal.com/

Two great books for your project would be "All American Wonder" (volumes one
and two) by Ray Cowdery. I found my copies from a local Borders bookstore
but you might have to order them. ISBN # 0-910667-10-1 and 0-910667-20-9
They have a lot of detail on restoring jeeps like yours.

I have a 1951 M38 military jeep. I'm far from an expert but if I can help be
sure to let me know.

Good luck!

Steve Johnston
