[MV] M38 Rear Axle Question

Hello List:
I have my M38 rear axle torn down to replace bearings and seals.
Incidentally, I had the housing boiled out in an engine shop vat (boy, did
that help)!
In looking at TM9-1804B, "Power Train, Body and Frame," page 116, there are
two items shown that my rear axle unit did not have. The rear axle does not
appear to have been opened since new. The items are "A," Guide, Axle Shaft,
7372869, and "B," Seal, Oil, Axle Shaft, Outer, 500034. These appear to be
located at the "chunk" end of the axle housing tubes where they join the
center housing portion.
My unit does have an oil seal at the outer end of the axle housing tubes
just inboard of the axle bearings. These are called out in the manual just
like I found on disassembly.
Now, for the question: Is this rear axle supposed to have oil seals at
both the inboard position as shown on page 116 AND at the outboard position
near the axle bearings?? Or is this illustrating two different versions of
the housing assembly?? Do I need the axle shaft guides -- the axle splines
fit just fine into the differential gears without one? I am tempted to put
it back together the way it came apart.
Has anyone encountered the guides and/or seals at the inboard position??
What material are the guides made of? Any experience you folks have would be
appreciated.

Best regards,
