[MV] Inspector???

While removing the many layers of paint on my M38A1 windshield, I came
accross the word "INSPECTOR" stenciled in yellow 3 inch letters. This
was right on top of the original OD paint so I'm assuming that the
military put it there. I have asked many people about this but no one
seems to know or remember what an "inspector" was. Can anyone tell me
what an inspector did and why they used a Jeep?
