I'm not sure where, but I have read, I think in one of Crismon's books, that
the military standardized on the the 24 volt system for the M series vehicles
because it is specialized. The shear number of vehicles that Uncle Sam buys
allows mass production of "odd stuff" and 24 volt was chosen because it was
odd. When MV's were 6 and 12 volt, so were civilian vehicles, and there was
a big problem with parts being pilfered from military stocks for personal use
by GI's & government employees. Not much on M series electrical systems
useable on civy cars, thus....
