Re: [MV] M38A1 Distributor Problem

BOY DID I MAKE A MISTAKE!

If the distributor is off one way or the other,
the oil pump has to be dropped and realined so that
when reseated and the distributor inserted, the rotor points
to the right cylinder. The distributor can only seat in one position
while the oil pump is governed by the its and the cam gears.

This is true with the GPW/MB, M38, M38A1 and M715.
Chevy has the CAM drive the distributor which then drives the pump.

With the oil pump partially dropped, you use a long screwdriver
to initially set the slot, back one tooth, bolt the pump
back up and you will see the slot move that one tooth. The gears
are being ingaged, thus the slight turn of the slot.

The TMs that I remember, show both the before and final slot position
of the slot. Absence of this material, you go by the placement
of plug tower 1, with the crank at TDC for cylinder 1, firing, points just
opening and fine tune the oil pump gear positioning.

Hope this sets me straight.
