[MV] Adverse effects of improper stockage...

This is to the attention of fellow listees who had inquired
about the availability of my Willys MB for Normandy 99:

The reason why my Jeep could not be brought up to snuff on short
notice is that it had stayed garaged for nearly two years
without proper attention and without having been prepared for
stockage: at the time I had expected my brother to fire her up
now and then and even use her to go hunting...
None of that happened, and the gas eventually decomposed, and
some of the gas components litterally "ate" the screen at the
bottom of the filler neck. The telling signs were bubbling paint
around the tank cap, and a really foul smell...and a tar-like
deposit around the shreds of filter material left...
Unfortunately for me, I had tried valiantly to start the Jeep
BEFORE finding out that the gas had gone bad: by the time I had
re-primed the fuel pump, and cranked the engine repeatedly, a
lot of the goo and tar residue from the the tank had gone up the
fuel lines, in the carb and in the combustion chamber... BAAAD
NEWS...
It will cost me around $1,000 in French Francs to get the beast
running again: the brake cylinders also had to be changed, their
inside is all rusted up, and the tank interior and filler neck
were also badly rusted in the interior, down to the gas (?)
level: They tell you to store with a full tank off stabilized
gas, if you can't drain dry...and Normandy is so humid, that
there is no such thing as "dry". The mechanic will have to
remove the head, clean up fuel lines, repair fuel pump, change
fuel filter element, rebuild the carburetor, clean valves and
cylinders...etc... Unfortunately, the Jeep is in Normandy and I
can't do the work myself, I had to have it towed to a shop...
I learned yet another lesson, the hard way...

Any info on good stockage procedures would be appreciated...

Antoine
