I've seen that photo, and it is the only one I have seen with the tyre in
that position. Given the weight of the wheel and carrier this is not the
place to put it, believe me, there is only sheet metal up there and
although it is thck it isn't that strong. From memory the shot doesn't
show if the original carrier is still there.

I did hear it mentioned some time ago that the very last of the WC 53
Carryalls were issued without spare wheel or carrier, as they were just
for admin use in the US, and it was common to find jeeps, Command Cars and
Carryalls running around 8th Air Force bases with no spare wheel as well,
because how far would you have to walk home......
