Hi

Starting a TD-9 is a simple procedure, but in can
also be difficult. There is a lever(should be on
the left side, probably straight) When you pull
this lever down(or back)it opens a set of valves
to a chamber that has the effect of reducing the
compression ratio of the engine. The lever also
opens a valve that lets gas flow into the carb.
The throttle lever should be fully closed to shut
off any diesel to the injection pump. Once you
have fuel in the carb. Spark to the spark plugs,
and the enging running on gas, it should run for
about 2 minutes, or 800 revolutions. A slow idle
is all it will run. You can start to open the
throttle for the diesel. If there is diesel
present, the smoke will darken, and you will lose
some rpms. If this happens, you can release the
starting lever and advance the throttle. Before
trying to start it on diesel be sure to have fuel
to the injection pump. If it has been sitting
awhile, I would be sure to drain any water from
the fuel system. I can send you some photocopies
from a TD-14 book which is the same
procedure/style of engine. All of the IH engines
that start on gas and switch to diesel use the
same procedure, as they are the same style.
