Tom,
I recently had a very similar shifting problem on my '42GPW. The
transmission was very hard to shift and go into various gears, especially 1st
gear. I replaced the clutch, the pressure plate and had the flywheel
resurfaced. Still had the same shifting problem. I took it apart again and
replaced the throwout bearing which looked and felt to be OK. I also
replaced the small spring that returns the throwout bearing. The previous
owner said he had replaced the throwout bearing with a new one and it only
had a few hundred miles it.
I also replaced the pilot bearing in the flywheel.
My transmission now shifts perfect
