The bumperettes are missing on my jeep, but according to the photographs =
(actual photos, not drawings) in a 1955 original printing of the M38A1/M170=
service manual the extended portion points down.

I think you might be wrong: Ray Cowdery in AAW shows extended
portion pointing UP in all of the period pictures..
