Cut round the horizontal seam and hinged (or even just cut off) they make
great tool boxes, beer coolers (alledgedly) etc. I might fix one to use
as a spare water can, but I'd never put fuel in it.

Even here in the UK plenty of the original cans are available at
reasonable prices, so not worth any particular effort to fix. I know one
fellow DUKW owner (who will remain nameless- but for the sake of argument
we can call him Simon) who bought a job lot of them, mostly dented, then
made an adapter for the screw top so he could use air pressure to blow
them back to shape - he made a few pounds on that deal.
