Hello Henry...

Sounds like you had a bit of a scare with the
winch.. Nice of you to post that info so others
may learn from your experience!!

As for winch use, I wanted to share one thing
we did in the past..

I have an M37 with winch and had ordered a
new length of wire-rope from Antelope Valley
Truck Parts..

A novel idea for winding the new line on the
drum came to mind, so that the layers would
look clean and straight...

In the neighborhood is a street with a
slight slope to it, perhaps only a few
degrees..

I drove the M37 over there and my partner
drove the shorter of the two land-rovers
that we have.. We unrolled the new wire rope
off of the wood spool that it was shipped on,
and laid it down the street, then hooked the
landrover to the end of it.

Using the rover as a drag-weight against the
new drum-line worked really well, with the Land-Rover
in neutral and the brakes off,and the cable
was guided back and forth on the drum with an
old broom-stick handle so the turns were properly
next to one another..

Worked great, and entertained the residents in the
neighborhood.. One guy came out and asked why we
had an army truck, and I responded that
"No we are not National Guard...just local militia"

:-)

Trish
