Bill, during my research into markings etc, I did notice that USMC mutts did
not have any National Symbol. At first, I thought it was the
"don't-know-the-rules" syndrome, but after seeing lots photos of USMC
vehicles, I noticed that none sported the Star.

Like you and other contributors to this debate, I had presumed that the
National Symbol was part of some Geneva Convention (like frontline ambulances
MUST NOT carry the symbol).......... So how come the USMC was/is exempt? I
know that USAF vehicles carried the Star (don't know if they still do),,,,,
but what about the Marines??? Their vehicles don't, and I don't think they
ever did. Anyone know what the USMC-version of the Painting TM is?
