[MV] MB ENGINE BLOCKS

Could any one help with identifying MB engine blocks, in general ?

For example, I have seen an engine block with a raised face on the side of
the block, which would be about underneath the oil filter. The face is about
3/4" wide by about 2" long, rounded on each end. The face has no numbers on
it (maybe ground off ?) There are some cast numbers near the bottom of the
block, also :

638632-W3 A NI-CR-N2

This block also has a "boss" on top of the block, directly behind the water
pump.
This boss is the same size as the later CJ blocks, where the CJ eng no's.
were stamped.

I have another block with the same boss on the side and cast no.s of

638632 W1 A NI-CR-N2

But the boss behind the water pump is much smaller (maybe 3/4" long as
opposed to 2 1/2" long on a CJ2A)

I've read somewhere that the "638632" casting no. designates WW2 time period,
but I don't recall where I read it.

Are these WW2 MB blocks ?? How can you tell for sure ?

Thanks,

John
