[MV] Winching vehicles

As to winching vehicles, after 20 years in the service I saw that all the
winching was done by an un-stuck vehicle. The "self winching" usually
didn't occur because murphy always put the nearest tree about 1/4 mile away
or at a radical angle. An army manual described, with pictures, on how to
employ a 'dead man'. This is any object, such as a 6ft chunk of tree or
utility pole that you bury in a 'T' shaped hole to have a purchase for your
cable hook. To my reckoning, we are back with murphy who forbids any tree
to be near a place to get stuck. And, we weren't issued chain saws anyway.
As for a utility pole chunk, we never found a utility pole that wouldn't
offend the utility company. And, just imagine getting stuck during the
Persian gulf war! No trees and the dead men were pretty useless as dead
men. I'll bet you will have a hell of a time even finding big rocks or
hard clay to dig your deadman hole.
I'll wager you will find yourself winching others almost exclusively. I
did. I had a snatch block. Never used it.

Cheers, Gary in gator land.
