I've been involved with using oven cleaner to remove painted signs on the
sides of vans. The oven cleaner does a great job of removing the painted
sign(usually enamel). If the vehicle still has the factory baked paint, it
won't hurt the surface much. There will be some dulling that can be buffed
out. If the vehicle has been repainted, it will damage the paint. The amount
of damage depends on the type of paint. I've seen enamel with hardener in it
that has been severely dulled. To the point of not all of the dulling buffing
out. I would imagine that straight enamel paint(air dry type) would lift.
