[MV] MB/GPW engine?

Hi listees,

As usual I had a surprise while working on my '43 GPW yesterday. It has
what is supposed to be an MB engine in it...the rest is GPW.

Anyway, I changed the oil and had a new filter cartridge to put in that I
got from Brent Mullens. I got the old one out....and compared it with the
new one.....HMMMMMMM...they were different. The old one was of smaller
diameter and also was shorter than the replacement by about 1 inch in both
dimensions (about 2.54cm for you NASA guys).

I tried to install the new one....it cleared the sides of the filter
housing by 1/4 inch or so, but was too tall. I looked into the filter
housing and saw that there was a "seat" on the central shatf that the
filter cartridge goes over. The "seat" kept the fliter from going in
further.....SO

1) did I get the wrong filter from Brent?

OR

2) do I have a "modified" MB engine/filter housing?...how can I tell that
it is not a CJ2 or later engine?

thanks
