I just called my California Highway Patrol and California DMV offices ,and
was told the following.A CDL is only required if the vehicle is over 26,000#
GVW,if you tow a trailer of more than 10,000# GVW when the gross combination
weight rating exceeds 26000#,if a vehicle is designed to carry 15 or more
passengers excluding driver(I guess the deuce with troop seats might qualify
here),or if you drive a vehicle of any size or type that is required to
display hazardous materials placards. The CHP officer also said that vehicles
with Historical Vehicle license plates were exempt from having to stop at
the weigh stations because they really shouldn't be hauling anything with
those type of plates anyhow.
