Hi Mike,

That is "AN" (Army-Navy) nomenclature assigned under the JETDS (Joint
Electronics Type Designation System). The "V", obviously, is for
"vehicle"; the parentheses would enclose an alpha (A, B, etc) to
indicate a slight variation in the basic V-41 - it might be a different
manufacturer, small variation in the (original) utility body, etc; the
"G" is for "ground" equipment; and the "T" is for "telephone" related.
See http://www.gordon.army.mil/museum/an.htm for an elaboration of the
JETDS.
