Original M54 steering is Ross Model HP-70. There is a large cast bracket on
the left frame rail that supports the steering gear. The steering gear
angles upward through a large notch that is stamped in fender (near location
of heater core).

The Ross gear on the 800 series trucks, which has been retrofitted to some
M54 trucks involves a hydraulic cylinder visible near the rear front wheel.

In my experience the 800 series type is much easier to steer, but has less
"feel" for the road than the original.

Good luck,
David
