[MV] ongoing Multi Fuel problem and progress report

Six months or so I posted the beginning of this story.
It began when I bought an M292 Expansible Van in Ft. Riley KS,, intending to
go and drive it the 600+ miles home.

The only problem was the truck wouldn't run. (LDT465-1C) It would run on
ether, but not on fuel. The problem was determined to be in the injection
pump head. I couldn't make another trip to Kansas, so the truck was hauled
to me (West Tennessee). Once here, the injection pump head was replaced
(along with the in-tank fuel pump, which worked intermittently). The truck
ran, but VERY POORLY, lots of smoke, low power, upper engine noise, and
required either very LITTLE ether OR extensive use of flame heater. Drained
fuel tank, replaced filters, refilled with fresh diesel. Got a marginal
improvement in performance.

TODAY, replaced fuel injection pump with a known good pump....but that is a
story in itself....

Pump was taken off my M35A2 and replaced a couple years ago because suddenly
one day the truck wouldn't idle. Foot off throttle, engine dies, just like
you pulled fuel shut off. I replaced the pump, and sent the one I took off
to an injection pump shop to have it repaired.

This is the pump I installed today. The truck now starts easily, has PLENTY
of power and speed and runs smooth, and smoke is at a minimum.

The problem is, IT still won't idle, and there is still a slight upper engine
noise, which seems to get louder as the engine heats.

SO, any ideas on how to correct the idle problem. If I adjust the screw on
the pump near the throttle lever so it continues to run, its running 1200 RPM
and works its way up to 1600 by itself, even with screw locked down.

Any idea about upper engine noise? Seems to be in number 1 or 2 cylinder,
and sounds like Chevy lifter ticking. Can lifters be pulled through push rod
holes?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, and all help thusfar are appreciated.

Thanks,
David
