Strangely enough, I got a new issue of Motorhome mag today and in the
Powertrain Q & A section, someone wrote in about a noisy fan clutch on a
454 c.i.d. Chevy engine in his RV. The answer was, and I quote:
"A clutch fan uses a silicone fluid that's controlled by a thermostatic
spring and valve inside the center hub. The most common problem to be
looking for when you suspect the system is not operating properly is
overheating. Sometimes the fluid wll leak out. After awhile, dirt will
stick to the coating of fluid, which is a telltale sign of impending
failure. You should hear the fan kick in and roar when the engine is
hot (exceeding about 220 degrees F). It sounds almost like the
transmission downshifting."
I agree with the answer you got saying if it roars it's working and
should be OK.
Good Luck
