There's the clincher: In California, all trucks (defined as vehicles
designed primarily for hauling cargo, and specifically including
pickup trucks), are considered commercial vehicles. Pickup trucks (and
Jeeps, etc) are exempted from the requirement to stop at scales, and
do not fall into the classifications which require class A or B
licenses, but are still considered commercial vehicles. I learned this
directly from he commercial vehicle enforcement division of CHP while
figuring out how to register my deuce. They require weight
certificates for registration (the dealer usually handles this for
most people, so the average pickup truck owner doesn't realize it
happens), and I think they even get license plates from a differen
numbering sequence. I believe that weight fees are included in the
registration renewal price, but are small. My M998 HMMWV is considered
commercial (like a pickup truck), and required a weight certificate
for registration, but I can drive it with a class C, and do not need
to stop at scales.

Have I mentioned that Kalifornia stinks on ice? :-)
