Howdy Dr. Dean,

I have bought and sold vehicles with and without titles and dealt with
quirky and weird sellers (and buyers) in my time, so I sympathize. I do
not know anything about the appropriate value of Greyhounds but have
this $2.00 worth (inflation don't you know) of suggestions which I hope
will prove helpful if you decide to pursue the transaction.

1. Since you are dealing out of state, DEMAND that the putative owner
obtain a title from his DMV and fax you a copy of it before you go back
to finalize the deal. BTW I found it odd that the picture of the rear of
the vehicle showed what appeared to be a license plate although the
owner stated that the vehicle had never been titled. I have never seen a
DMV issue plates without registering and titling a vehicle, other than
issuing a 'trip plate' (usually paper) to allow a vehicle to drive to a
scale or DMV office for a weight verification ticket or a VIN
verification, required for registration, or something similar. Was the
plate a 'joke' plate? I thought the FORD badge on the front was a nice touch!

2. Safety is a factor in paying cash. If a person insists on cash and I
am at all concerned, I have my banker contact a corresponding bank in
the town where the vehicle is located. You can then wire transfer funds
to that bank and arrange for them to have the cash ready when your
seller, and his nice new title and registration, walk in. You may then
inspect the title and registration and, if everything matches what he
faxed you previously, instruct the banker to hand him the stack of crisp
$100.00 bills. You two can then go out for cocktails. You do not carry
big bucks around, he gets his cash, and you have your signed over title
and registration!

Iligitimati non carborundum,
