I was finally able to get the upper portion of the new seal in place a few
minutes ago. At first I had not loosened the main bearing caps because I
didn't think the input shaft of the trans would have enough play in it to
allow the crank to drop down any. After a few suggestions from the list
members I tried it and it worked.
Back to work on this mess now.
