The LDS multifuel engines in the 5 tons had a tendency to smoke quite a bit
under load, even when they were running well. In today's polite society,
this doesn't fly very well. Try running an injector cleaner additive though
and see if it helps. Additionally, put a pressure gauge in the intake
manifold, downstream of the turbo and make sure it is generating enough
boost. Sometimes the waste gate will hang open, id it is the model that has
one.
