Tranny overfull, xfer needs oil GPW

OK all you MB/GPW people:

The xfer was very low on gear oil but when I pulled the tranny plug, I got a
BIG surprise all over the floor.

Can the oil migrate from the xfer to the tranny on an MB/GPW?
