A hydro static drive is a device that consists of a positive displacement
pump and a series of pistons in a series of bores arranged like the magazine
of a revolver. As fluid is pumped in the piston presses on a slip plate.
The angle of the slip plate determines how much rotation of the cylinder
barrel will result from a given amount of piston travel (forward or reverse
direction). This results in a completely variable, but none the less, very
tight transmission.

Hope that helps.
