John,
What you have is an officer's bedding roll, or rather, what is typically an
officer-only type item since they are far from portable. RHIP, (rank has its
privileges.) You make no mention of the mattress or mattress cover or
pillow which is also supposed to be part of the bedding roll. There should
be a canvas "envelope" at each end, one for the pillow and the other for
misc items. The open ends of the "envelopes" faces toward the center of the
roll when it is all laid out. Three straps and buckles secure the roll and
contents into a cyclindrical shape of approximately 18-20 inches in
diameter. I have been told of a separate canvas that further waterproofs
the rig when rolled and acts as a ground sheet when the thing is laid out,
but my model 1935 bedding roll doesn't have that part. Hope this helps.
