The "engine stop" knob on the dash should stay out until you push it
back in (that is, there should not be a spring return). If pushing the
knob back in does not push the fuel shutoff plunger on the injection
pump back in, the stop cable might be mis-adjusted or binding, and/or
the plunger might be binding. If the inner part of the cable is not
straight between the fuel shutoff plunger and the point where the
cable's outer jacket (the coiled spring-like part) is attached the the
engine, then it might just bend if the plunger binds at all. Mine has
worked much more smoothly since I readjusted it.

I don't know about other folks, but I leave my engine stop knob pulled
out when I park my truck.

By the way, double-check that the return spring on the accelerator
linkage is actually hooked through the appropriate hole on the
linkage. Mine was out of place, such that the end of the spring wire
was on the linkage but did not pass through the hole, and I'm really
lucky that I caught that before the spring popped off! Hmm, that's
hard to describe without a picture. Maybe I just confused you more...
