Ken,

Try this and see if it helps. Remove your timing window cover (little metal
box on the side of the pump that the kill switch connects to). Save the
gasket. Underneath, you will find two screws held with a wire. Cut the
wire, remove the screws. Under that, you will find a "T" shaped piece. The
leg of the "T" swings below the ears. You will find a clip holding a rod in
the bottom hole. Remove it (when I removed mine, I had two sheets of white
paper tucked in spots that it might fall in to so I could not lose it). The
"T" shaped piece is called the "fuel control unit assembly". It should
slide out easily, take extra care when removing - this has a very small "T"
shaped piece on the back end. That piece is called "the plunger sleeve
pin". Take care when re-installing the field control unit assembly because
you will need to finesse the plunger sleeve pin back into its hole.

After you have removed the "fuel control unit assembly" carefully remove and
save its "O" ring. Soak it in B12 carburetor cleaner for 3-4 hours. After
that I also used a "Gunk" brand penetrating oil with Teflon for about three
hours. A picture of the break-down is in manual TM 9-2910-226-34 page 3-28
figure 3-36. This matches with the repair I just did on my M35A2 and works
if the vehicle has sat long enough for the "fuel control unit assembly" to
lock up with gum (mine sat for six years).

Hope this helps.

Subject: [MV] M35 Engine Surging

I just got the engine started and running in my latest m-109 shop van.
It's an LDT-1 (I think), with the turbo. It wouldn't start, I couldn't
get fuel to come out of the distribution head to the injector lines. Read
here about someone who had the reverse problem (wouldn't shut down), so I
tried looking into the same area for repairs. Took out the distribution
head, and found a small (1/4") top-hat shaped metal obect down in the
hole, along with a spring washer thing that held the top-hat onto the
bottom of the distributer shaft (I don't know what else to call these
things). Got another spring washer thing, re-assembled it, and it
started. Yay. But, after running for about a minute, it began to surge,
hi and low. Had to pull the throttle out to get it to run at all, at a
high idle, and it still surges, but not as hi-and-low. If I let it idle
at normal speed, it will surge hi, then drop down and quit. It does this
each time I start it, runs okay for about a minute, then the surging
starts.
Any ideas on how to solve this one?
Ken
