An "A" in this paperwork probably means "Awaiting" or "Authorized." "AFO"
and "AF" probably meant Awaiting Further Orders.
My guess on the whole translation is that he served in the Atlantic Command
while training and awaiting being put on to a boat crew. He then went to
the Pacific, was wounded, and returned home to recuperate in USNH St. Albans
NY. My guesses are based on some Army Paper Work I have seen. I would go
look for a 1945 or so USN administrative manual, or manual for discharge of
seamen, and look for the terms used in describing a sailor's service. Early
WWII manuals would be helpful, but probably full of administrative jargon
that went out the window once they had two clerks to process 500 discharges
a day in 1945. Good luck on this project. It is one of the more important
ones you will do in your hobby.
