Crystal Drano and hot water.  Great for removing gunk, paint, skin, etc.  For really stubborn "stuff" continue to heat the water Drano mixture.  Word of warning.  When adding Drano to already very hot water, expect it to boil immediately.

Oh yeah, this mixture will completely disolve many types of metal/alloys.  If it isn't steel, I'd be wary of using this.
