Sir,

The " New Hat " has been the subject of many a discussion, some ugly ones I
am sure. My LTC has been around for a while and his general feeling is that
the current issue cap, while not as " cool " as the beret, has a great deal
more functionality. In colder climes it keeps the head warmer. In the
delightful desert summers, it keeps the head cooler and does a great deal to
prevent sunburn and heatstroke. Being a fair skinned individual, I can
really understand his point.

I used to know an old CSM who thought that heat stroke was a self inflicted
injury because you should be paying attention to the situation at hand and
making sure of your physical condition. ( Call supply and order up a 55
gallon drum of sunscreen and a drum pump ).

Soon we can worry about our black Frisbee hat blowing off whilst driving
down the road in an open top HMMWV ( mandatory MV Content ). I sure I will
cut a dashing figure as the Medics are policing up my sunburned, heat
prostrated body off the range this summer.

I MIGHT BE WORTHLESS, BUT AT LEAST I LOOK GOOD !!

Randy Orpe
