RE: [MV] Deuces and hubs

I laughed until I had tears in my eyes when I read this. It SOUNDED like a
GREAT idea until you let reality into the discussion! The picture of a
deuce-and-a-half on wet pavement spinning the middle axle will be forever
forged in my mind. Then, the speed bump is even worse! What happens when
the third axle lifts the middle axle off the ground?

Did you have an air shift transfer case? Or did you have to put the
original axles back in place right then and there?

Thanks for piping up before I went out and did something incredibly bad to
my truck!

Subject: [MV] Deuces and hubs

All of your opinions/ideas are correct...... I was thinking of modifying
rear axel to fit a hub so I could unlock one of the drive axels....
lucky for me I tried the "stub axel" trick before I did the
machining....I got stuck in a blacktop parking lot in the rain on a >1%
grade [also in front a 4" high speed bump] empty.....The idea for the
disconnection was immediately forgotten! Front hubs make steering easier
and reduce vibration/shimmy they effect fuel mileage very little maybe 1
mpg at road speed <50mph....under load conditions you will not notice
any difference except on trips more than 100 miles loaded with 5000
pounds or pulling a trailer of more than 3500 and that is with very
carefully measurement of fuel and mileage.....tire scrub is a fact of
life. Tires on a dual axel setup will scrub either front or rear or
sometimes both depending on load-weight-inflation-tire size-speed and
any other factor you can think of.....A heavy hauler here in near
Cincinnati get less than 5000 miles on certain axels of his 13 axel
trailer with 4 tires per axel.....
If you get any ideas about modification of a Deuce to improve mileage or
performance please post them on the list as maybe someone has tried it
or has the time to do some experimenting....geof
