Ok,
I gonna jump off and take a whack at this, someone jump on me if I miss it.

The transmission connects the Engine to the Xfer, neutral separates this
connection.
The Xfer connects the Trans to the axels (and other stuff), neutral
separates this connection.
In the sprag system, the "automatic" engage between front and rear axels is
a different system inside the Xfer and remains connected.
An Air operated system in perfect condition should only be connected if the
operator engages it, however as Everett as told us this is not always true.

is my assessment correct, or did i miss something?
I'm gonna have to buy a trashed out M35 to take all of this apart to look at
it!
I can just see the wife's face now "Honey, I'm gonna buy another green truck
to put in the yard, is trashed and no good for anything but I want to take
it all apart to look at it".

When she kills me you are all invited to the funeral to tell dirty stories.

The TM says that an M44A2-series (air shift) truck can be flat towed
like that, but that an earlier (sprag clutch) truck needs to have
driveshafts removed. It probably wouldn't hurt to pull drive shafts
anyway, especially if a TM isn't available to tell you it's OK to
leave them in. The driver who pulled my deuce home wanted to pull my
rear driveshaft regardless of what the TM said, just to play it safe.
He said that his boss would have a cow if he was caught towing a truck
with the driveshafts in place.
