Every Mercedes-Benz 300SL sports car (Gullwing, later Roadster) in the
late 1950s had a direct fuel injection into the cylinder. And also the
well-known
nice Mercedes-Benz aircraft engines DB 601 and later.

Douggen: Have you ever checked the CO-content of the exhaust gas?
Go to a workshop which has an exhaust gas analyser (exhaust-emission tester)
CO on idle speed in such an old fashioned engine should be around 4-5 per cent.
Check it. It is the easiest way to find out, if the mixture is too lean (air
leaks
in the intake system).

The other test is to drip fuel (petrol, gas) on the gaskets of the intake
system.
If the engine suddenly runs better, when the gasket is wet from petrol, there is

an air leak. Attention! Be very careful. Don't lite your shed or your vehicle!

Best regards
Andreas
