You should be able to turn on the headlights with one hand, by
pinching the two levers between thumb and forefinger. It's hard to
just turn on the stoplights that way without overshooting into the
service drive position. That's not a big deal, though, because you'll
generally turn on the stoplights before you start moving.

Note that on a HMMWV, the horn doesn't work unless the switch is in
stop light or service drive. One handy side-effect is that if you
decide to add backup lights (a good idea, and probably a legal
requirement in your state anyway), you can tap their power from the
appropriate wire at the horn using a "Y" adapter, and then the backup
lights will only work in stop light or service drive mode, just like
on HMMWV ambulances that have them. The shift lever box should have a
threaded hole for the backup light switch, even on HMMWV models that
don't normally have backup lights. On many other military trucks, the
horn works regardless of the light switch setting.
