During the war, IBM made a very interesting gadget called an Odograph which
plotted the position and course of a moving vehicle. It was fitted to jeeps
and trucks. It consisted of a number of boxes of very intricate mechanical
or electromechanical machinery, and its output was on an XY-plotter (or
what looks like one).
I took a couple of photos of one that was on display at last year's Swap
Meet held by the Military Jeep Club of Queensland:
