Glenn hello It's Rob here:
Yourn thoughts about the starter running backwards are un founded. There are
the motors that have "Permanent Magnets" as the Pole pieces... that when the
polarity is reversed then those Types will run backwards.

However, to make your starter run backwards you would also need to swap over
the "Start and Finish" of the field coils windings. Then regardless of
wether or not your + & - polarity is reversed ... with the Field
windings also reversed is when you you have the wrong North and South poles
within your starter and this is the reason it would spin in the opposite
direction.

If any of you have those smaller electric winches which have these powerful
"Permanent Magnets" to operate the winch in the other direction in this
example is when the electric motor spin backwards.

You can do the same thing with nearly any electric motor including the type
that is used on your drill press and so on.
In the case of the "drill press motor" that has a "Start & a Run winding"
and a centrifugal switch... You would need to swap the "Start" windings,
two wires.
