Ian, the vent hoses help facilitate water crossings. Even civilian GM 4x4's
have them. In the world of off roading we run these up to an air box with a
little breather cap on the top. As far as pressure build up, take the little
check valve out of the hose and clean it with some type of solvent or maybe
brakleen. These can clog up and cause a pressure buildup the pop and release
G/O.....
