M-series speedometer installation problems

I have a M35A2. Speedo didn't work. Bought NOS cable inner/outter combo.
Installed, and looks good. Inserted one end (don't remember which) into
speedo and it came to life. Lived for a day or two and then quit.
Removed speedo and noticed that there is virtually nothing inside the
rear of the speedo to grab onto the square end of the cable. It's
perfectly smooth. Looks polished, in fact. Is something missing, here?
Put in a known, working speedo, and it came to life. Worked for a
mile and a half. Dead. Same deal. Cable was inserted fully into the
speedo. Cable spins fine. Is there supposed to be some sort of end piece
made of rubber that you put on the end of the cable? This is getting
frustrating.
    Thanks. Jim
