Oops,
I forgot to mention that on trucks equipped with overrunning clutch type
sprags, it is CRITICAL that the shift lever be moved through the first gear
position when changing from reverse to forward travel.
There are those who take off in second, particularly with Multifuel trucks.
Failing to move the shifter at least through first after backing results in
front wheel drive being set up for reverse while you are driving. This can
result in hard steering, wheel hop, a lot of noise (banging, popping), loss
of control, damage to transfer case.
