Would it not be better to leave the axle in the splines for protection,
and cut the center out of the flange? Then a bearing could be externally
mounted to locate the center. This suggestion, of course, is unimpeded by
any sort of reality testing. :)

I take it the axle shafts cannot be yanked out and stored in the back?
