Lots of grease helps

One set I saw a guy made up had a roller bearing mounted in the gutted cap to
carry the end of the shaft. You'll need to carry the end of the shaft somehow
or it'll be flopping around inside there and may do some damage. Machining
out the splines in the hub may be fine but I'd be concerned about wearing the
splines on the axle shaft against the gutted hub.
