Cucv GEN 1 light

Hi list,
I have determined that the reason that my GEN 1 does not come on is that the
alternator is going bad. When you crank it, after the glow plugs cycle, the
alternator does not show a charge on the dash voltmeter or a handheld
touching the battery posts. Rev the engine and the alternator starts
charging. This is not the answer that I wanted, but it does fit the facts.
Question. Is it better to replace the alternator or have it rebuilt?
Some other CUCV facts:
Glow plugs should be 12volt. If they show 6volt, disconnect them from the
resistor bank. You can hook them up to 12volt block beside the glow plug
relay.
There is a relay under the dash that controls the voltmeter. It is near the
big diagnostic plug. There are two that look alike. The other one is a
starter relay. Disconnect it and you truck won't start with the key. Ask
me how I know this.
