I had the same problem a while back. I pulled the starter
many times, tried different ones, etc. After a few days and
several frustrated words to truck, i noticed that the
starter pinion gear had some burrs on it from use and it
would not allow the pinion gear to engage the ring gear. I
disassembled the starter, gleaned up the pinion gear with a
grinder, reassembled, and never had another problem!!
