If any unit is designed for 400hz it can only output at that frequency or
higher, possibly. To operate at lower freq requires MORE iron in the core
structure else it will overheat and destruct. That is the reason for 400hz
in the first place, simply to save weight esp wrt aircraft equipment.

AC power began, rather arbitrarily at 25hz which required HUGE rotors and
stators, but it was for railroads so they did not care at first. England
then shifted to 50hz to enjoy size and weight savings and remain there to
this day (Europe too). Again this decision was arbitrarily arrived at by
simply doubling the freq. Resulted in a weight savings something like 4
times. The US chose to proceed with 60hz for additional savings plus the
joy of easy synchronization with seconds & minutes. But is the synch
really that much easier with 60? I'm now wondering . . . Bill
